Heritage and environment NGO Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) welcomes recent initiatives in favour of Malta’s natural and built heritage. The cast-iron protection of a these ecological sites is of the utmost importance, especially at ecological oases like Comino, where a major development project is being planned.
Dr Claire Bonello for FAA stated “Yesterday’s refusal of a permit to build a souvenir shop at Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay in Qala, Gozo, is a very encouraging decision”. FAA, present for the hearing, had objected strongly to this ‘thin edge of the wedge’ development which might appear harmless, but would invariably set a precedent for other developments to ruin this natural site. FAA supports the Moviment Harsien Hondoq and Qala Local Council’s efforts to preserve its locality for the benefit of residents, and calls on other residents and local councils to do the same.
FAA is especially gratified at the news that the social housing project planned for Cospicua will respect the area’s heritage while creating more public open space. FAA had highlighted its concerns about this project when the first, damaging plans were presented, and is happy to note that new plans were drawn up after the insistent objections of Mr John Vella, curator of the Bir Mula heritage museum. Once again residents’ outcry has proved effective in saving some of the character of our heritage towns.
Heritage buildings and landscapes are what makes Malta special; to this end FAA is today holding a symposium on ‘Maltese Heritage at Risk’ to highlight both what is at stake, and the benefits of protecting our characteristic old buildings. Heritage has many direct and indirect benefits; it is not only the basis of our cultural identity, but also draws tourists and investment, as well as reducing national health spending through reduced pollution when traffic is limited in heritage areas.
FAA urges the public, and especially Malta’s heritage authorities, to attend this symposium to be addressed by leading local and foreign experts, followed by a public debate. The symposium is being held at the Orpheum Theatre, Sir Patrick Stuart Street, Gzira
