Filfla-1024x605

On Saturday, 11th July, join Flimkien għal-Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) for a heritage cruise to Filfla on the beautiful sailing vessel ‘Fernandes II’ and learn more about how this majestic islet has formed and other related curiosities.

FAA’ s 2015 heritage cruise to Filfla will leave from The Strand, Sliema, sailing past all the fortifications of the Grand Harbour and the southern coast, like Xagħjra Tower, Torri San Lucian, Torri San Tumas, and others.

Passing Marsascala at St. Thomas Bay we will notice the change in geology which changes from Lower Corraline to the whiter Upper Globigerina Limestone of the famous Munxar Cliffs, and observe a series
of inlets, such as il-Ħofriet, St.Peter’s Pool and the two Kalanka bays, It-Taqtiegħa rock near Xrobb L-Għaġin and Devil’s End rock (Xifer l-Infern) near Delimara point.

Passing Birżebbuġia, the Natura 2000 south-western cliffs become higher while the Mara Stack near Bengħajsa is an impressive sight. Approaching Filfla, the highlight of the trip, one can appreciate how this majestic islet was formed, with the boulder screes created by British target artillery/bombing making the islet ideal for breeding wildlife, especially sea birds which we hope to observe.

Leaving Fifla, passengers will have a chance of a dip in the shallow turquoise sea off Għar Lapsi. After hugging the southern cliffs to admire all the geological features, passing the valleys of Wied iż-Żurrieq, Wied Babu, Wied Ħallelin, Wied Bassasa and Wied Fulija, the next stop will be near the lonely offshore large boulder/stack known as Ħaġra Tas-Sajjetta. This 3-4 storey high rock is the only islet where we
will see the Maltese Rock-Centuary (Widnet il-Baħar), our national plant, and learn about all the other endemic flora and fauna that this coast supports. Our boat will eventually head towards Munxar cliffs for a second and final swim, before returning to Sliema.

Once again this cruise will be made on the Fernandez II as this is the only vessel available that offers our passengers a cooked buffet and the facility to take a swim en route. Since the outside seating is limited,
participants can bring their own mats/cushions or beach chairs.
