Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar invites its members and the general public to its third cultural walking tour around the beautiful heritage gardens of Floriana.

Historically, gardens in Malta were usually born as appendages to palaces and stately homes however Floriana, known as Malta’s ‘garden city’ boasts several public gardens set in the fortifications and a beautiful horticultural heritage.  Dr Joseph Buhagiar, Director of Argotti Botanic Gardens, and his staff will take participants round the Mall, Argotti and St Philip’s Gardens, giving insights into their history and information on the trees and plants to be found there, whilst  delving into the lives of those who created them, cherished them and made them the gems they are today.

Organised in collaboration with the Floriana Local Council, the tour will start at The Mall which dates back to 1656 and is one of the town’s most popular gardens.  Deriving its name from the popular Pall Mall game of the period, the Mall or Maglio, is an elongated garden lined with trees, ponds and statues. The tour will then take guests to the Argotti Botanical Gardens.  Steeped in history, these gardens were formed on St. James bastion in 1720 to be further embellished in 1741.  In the 19th century they became a botanical hub, with various experts leaving their mark on the gardens over the years.

The tour will also explore St. Philip’s Garden known for its beautifully crafted fountain and railway station. Also known as Il-Gnien tal-General, this garden formed part of the University botanic gardens up to 1973.  , Dr Joseph A. Buhagiar: Dr Buhagiar is a senior lecturer of Biology at the University of Malta and Director of the Argotti Botanic Gardens. In 1994 he was appointed University Curator of the plant collections at Argotti. He received his Ph.D. from Nottingham University where his research centred on investigations of how plant extracts affect the growth of cancer cells.
