Birgu – The Religious Heritage
Birgu was forever transformed with the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530. The religious community already in existence there – the Dominican Order – found itself shoulder with Greek refugees, building their own churches, and monastic Knights taking up residence in the Church of St. Lawrence. This led to an enriched religious heritage in Vittoriosa. Walk the trail of the Knights of St John in Birgu, and see what they would have seen – a convergence of religious lives, styles and traditions, stretching up until the present, despite the ravages of time. Join Vincent Zammit and FAA for a walk of discovery along the streets of Birgu.
