The relationship between the identification and treatment of disease and the visual arts of painting and sculpture is a fascinating topic which has, so far, received little attention outside academic circles.  This relationship can be considered from various aspects – the most obvious one being the depiction of a disease in a work of art: a disease that, in all likelihood, would be present in the sitter and faithfully reproduced by the artist.  The artist himself might be suffering from a disease and this might have various effects, both physical and psychological, in his works.  Identifying these traits in various famous and less-known paintings has been the focus of fascinating detective work on the part of Prof. Carmel Mallia, Professor in Medicine, University of Malta, who will share his discoveries on Tuesday 17thNovember at 6.30pm at the Italian Cultural Institute, St George’s Square, Valletta. Please book your seat online as this is sure to be a very popular talk.
